Trade magazine publishing
The contract publishing team at Design Inc understand that magazine publishing requires the right mix of ingredients. Without this, you can easily find yourselves with a publication that doesn’t hit the mark, appeal to the readers or doesn’t even reach the intended readership in the first place.

Since our beginnings, we have provided publishing services for many clients across a wide range of industry sectors. From creation to distribution, we provide a full service solution.

One of the trade magazines we publish is GUH News and Design Inc are proud to have been there from (almost) the very beginning of this publication – supporting membership organisation and trade body, Global Underwater Hub (previously known as Subsea UK) with its design & publishing.

The latest edition of GUH News, published in time for Subsea Expo ’24 this week, commemorates our fifteenth straight year we have publishes working this trade magazine. This is our longest-running magazine contract and, as it is published three times a year, that’s a lot of magazines under our belt.

This publication has undergone several significant changes from its humble beginnings as a simple newsletter. From our early overhaul of the design style – to give it the feel of a magazine – the focus has always been on ensuring the publication acts as a force in the sector.

As the organisation’s membership continued to grow, we saw a marked increase in the number of newsworthy articles submitted to be published as well as the request for advertising. This, in turn, led to the economic decision to reduce the number of editions from four to three each year but to ensure each of those three publications were bumper editions.
Around the same time, the publication benefited from more sustainable printing solutions as well as our introduction of the digital.

Bigger news articles had started to feature and, in 2013, the design style underwent a slight step-change as ‘feature spreads’ – creatively styled single articles – were introduced. These continue to this day.

The next significant design change occurred from late 2020 – 2022. Due to the pandemic, it was decided to significantly reduce the number of printed copies and to focus on digital resources. We introduced a more interesting & ‘interactive’ version of the magazine. Designed in InDesign and coded in In5, these versions featured animation, automated video and on-page movement within the digital document.

The latest design update to the magazine was a subtle rebranding due to the transitioning of Subsea UK into Global Underwater Hub back in 2021.

The latest edition of GUH News – titled ‘Navigating the Blue Economy’ to match the theme of Subsea Expo’24 – is the biggest it has ever been. And what a bumper edition it is: 56 pages, multiple feature spreads and a huge number of articles. The magazine is available for free at various locations at Subsea Expo ’24 or available to read here.
