Hands are one of the main ways that infections can be spread, and that is why the NHS first introduced the cleanyourhands campaign. The aim of this national initiative was simple - to improve the hand hygiene of healthcare workers and help stop the spread of preventable healthcare associated infections in and around hospitals.

Now in its third year, more and more NHS Trusts as well as patients and their visitors have been better educated to encourage good hand hygiene. And the team at Design Inc were happy to have been involved too, because when a number of NHS Trusts approached them to help create their information packs, we jumped at the chance.

NHS Design Inc's Senior Designer, Paul Munday says: "The opportunity to work with the NHS and its Trusts is always exciting, as it gives us the chance to show what we are capable of achieving."

Our first job was to work closely with the communication team at Epsom and St.Helier University Hospital. It was important to understand the reason behind this campaign, the associated budgets and timescales. So. after a comprehensive meeting, we fully understood the scope of the brief and proceeded to implement a design plan.

A suite of leaflets each promoting a different infection was required. In addition we were asked to create an exhibition stand. The most important thing here was for all of the leaflets to be designed with a very clear and easy-to-read message.

Managing Director of Design Inc, Dan Gilbert recalls: "Sometimes the best designs are the ones that just look like they have just fallen into place. This was one of those times when creative design ideas were reeled in and commercial design took precedence."

A style template was quickly created followed by the text, imagery and logos being formatted in place. The client was supplied with both soft and hard-copy proofs and after the thumbs up, the correct quantity of each were printed, folded and shipped to the customer. All within 10 days of receiving the initial call.
